Measuring your Click-Through Rate

We’ve all been there. Browsing a site, we notice an interesting ad, but how often do we actually click? And does it matter?

It matters to the advertiser. Click-through Rate (CTR) essentially measures the success of your online campaign by counting the number of users who actually click on a specific ad, vs. the number of people who SAW the ad, but kept on scrolling. If clicked, the ad would ideally direct the user to a specific page or desired action such as buy a product, try a service, watch a video or download a document.

A high CTR means that many users saw and clicked on your ad. A low CTR means loads of people saw your ad, but not many clicked on it. In that case, chances are your ad was not interesting or relevant enough and should be reevaluated or redesigned.

The equation used to measure CTR is a fairly simple one: Divide the number of clicks on a specific ad by the number of times the ad was viewed (“impressions”).

The CTR for every ad should be evaluated often to ensure the effectiveness of the campaign. While there is no concrete number that measures or defines a “good” or “bad” campaign, for a successful CTR, you want to make sure your ads are attractive and relevant to your offering, and draw the user to a website or desired call to action. You also want to make sure your keywords are affordable so you don’t end up with keywords that are so expensive your entire campaign isn’t sustainable or profitable.

So, a good CTR means you’ve used relevant keywords and built an ad attractive enough to bring users to act and click.
